A Shiny New Home on the Internet

Dear Readers,

Behind the scenes I’ve done some major renovation, and part of the upgrade is that Line of Selvage now has a new internet address!

For now, the old blog address will continue to work. But please, at your earliest convenience, update your bookmarks and RSS readers to use the new address:

Update: If you are reading this blog via Bloglovin’, I’ve updated the address there for you already, so you don’t need to do anything.

Update 2: If you are subscribed via WordPress.com, you’re also up to date and don’t need to do anything.

Two developments have led to this upgrade.

First, I’ve been having issues with my old Internet hosting provider, so I have decided to move the blog to a new hosting service. Second, a new internet top-level domain called “.blog” is now available. It is an alternative to the familiar (and widely misused) “.com”. So, I have moved over to the new address.

The address change is something I have wanted to do for a while. I originally created the blog under the “jotabout.com” domain, which I already owned for my computer software development work. The new .blog address gives Line Of Selvage an identity separate from my computer work, so I can return “jotabout.com” to its original purpose.

As an added benefit, the new hosting provider seems to have faster servers than the old, so pages should load faster.

The Breakfast Club Wardrobe, Part 5: Hammer Time

My goal was to get out of muslin-land by the time this 4th of July weekend was through. I almost made that goal; while I got a shirt and a pants muslin made, I think there’s at least one more to do.

The Shirt Muslin: Print It

I’m pleased with the alterations to the shirt pattern.

First, I like the look better with the shoulder seam relocated farther back. Now that I look at the photo, I notice some pull lines across the collarbone area, especially on the left, but wonder if that’s due to the use of pins rather than actual buttons.

RIP Google Reader

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Following Google’s decision to kill Google Reader, I’m joining a lot of other bloggers in offering alternatives.

I’m personally using Feedly for the moment, but mostly out of inertia. I’m not certain I’ll stick with it.

For those of you who prefer Bloglovin, I’ve signed up for an account and claimed my blog there. And I’ll try to get a widget onto the home page soon.

If there’s other reader apps you folks like, let me know and I will try to get subscription links posted.

The Tailored Shirt #2: Cutting, Fabrics and Interfacing

In today’s work on the Men’s Tailored shirt, I cut the pattern, and trace it. But first, some more thoughts on the pattern.

Revisiting the Pattern

After ruminating more on the pattern instructions, as well as finishing the video segments of Pam Howard’s course, I think I’m going to go with View A of McCall’s 2447. View A produces a sportshirt-type collar, but more importantly the construction steps are very much like Pam Howard teaches in the class. Notably, it doesn’t include the collar facing and the pattern instructions read a lot like the class. So I think I will be going with View A.

There’s also some uncertainty over what size collar I should try – there’s three sizes S, M and L. Without even measuring, I’m going to go with M and see how it turns out. There’s a method to my madness here – I’ll be using this muslin to do fitting on the boyfriend as well, so I’ll just use one muslin and see where everyone deviates from the pattern for fitting.
